Faure, Paul
(1878-1960)
   political figure
   Born in Périgueux, Paul Faure was a member of the French worker Party (Parti ouvrier français) of jules guesde and the founder of the newspaper Le Populaire de Centre (1914), which he directed until 1914. He was named secretary-general of the SFIO (Section française de l'Internationale ouvrière) after the schism of the socialists at the Congress of Tours (1920). Minister of state in the Popular Front governments (léonblum, 1936-37, camille chautemps, 1937-38) and a deputy, Faure signed the Munich Accords (September 1938) and then the armistice after France's defeat by Nazi Germany (1940), for which he was expelled from the SFIO in 1944.
